Established in 1906, the Freedom Express was a “weekly newspaper from Freedom, Oklahoma Territory that included local, territorial, and national news along with advertising.” It was pivotal in growing the Freedom, Oklahoma Territory community, and was originally printed under a tree by proprietors Bales & DeGreer.

Oklahoma garnered its Statehood in 1907 and the Freedom Express experienced a lot of changes in the years following. In 1922, ‘The Freedom Call’ was born when the newspaper was purchased by T. E. & W. T. Cowgill.

The Freedom Call has seen many ups and downs over the past century, including multiple owners/publishers. In 2021, the newspaper was purchased by Valerie Brown, through Freedom Express, LLC. Valerie, a native of Freedom, is an OIF Combat Veteran, with two tours to Iraq, serving as a Black Hawk crew chief on MEDEVAC.

Valerie aims to preserve The Freedom Call's legacy while taking it into the future for generations to come.
